Menggunakan kamus

Setiap kamus bermula dengan seksyen 10 (Konsep umum), di mana perenggan diberikan nombor bermula dengan 101. Seksyen dikenalpasti melalui dua digit kod dan perenggan-perenggan di dalamnya dikenalpasti melalui tiga digit kod. Kebiasaannya, akan terdapat antara 5 dan 9 perenggan bagi setiap seksyen. There are normally between 5 and 9 paragraphs per section. Dalam platform Wiki, setiap seksyen adalah merupakan laman Internet.

Setiap perenngan menerangkan tentang konsep demografi menggunakan istilah-istilah berkaitan yang lain. Istilah yang ditebalkan adalah merupakan terminologi penting yang terdapat dalam Kamus ini dan ditandakan dengan TextTerm dalam versi wiki. TextTerm dikenalpasti melalui nombor nota kaki. Oleh itu, lokasi bagi TextTerm boleh ditentukan dengan mengetahui nombor perenggan dan nombor nota kaki, sebagai contoh, 101-1, adalah kod lokasi bagi istilah demografi. When a section is displayed (an Internet page with a number on top), navigation bars display links to the chapters and sections of the Dictionary. The links are presented in terms of titles for the chapters and two-digit codes for the sections. Sections sharing the same first digit belong to the same chapter. The second edition of the Dictionary has nine chapters.

Above and below the navigation bars presenting links to chapters and sections, additional navigation bars present links to the different language modules. Note that, when available, there are different links to the first and second editions in a given language.

Mengakses istilah-istilah terjemahan

To access the translation of a TextTerm, click on the term desired in order to display a page having only the paragraph in which it appears. Just above the paragraph, a box labelled “Translation” appears. Click on the “show” button on that box. A table with the TextTerms contained in the paragraph displayed in all the languages appears. By clicking on the name of the language to which the translation is sought, the paragraph is displayed in that language.

Mendengar sebutan istilah

Just below each paragraph, a box with links to audio files containing the right pronunciation of each term is displayed. Clicking on those links accesses the audio files. Note, however, that preparation of the audio files is in progress and links in red indicate that the audio file is not yet available.

To access a numbered paragraph, for instance, paragraph 632 in the Arabic second edition (ar-ii), the URL can be typed in directly by noting that the number of the section (page) where the paragraph is located is 63 (that is, the first two digits of the paragraph number). Therefore the wiki address is: http://ar-ii.demopaedia.org/wiki/63

To access a paragraph in the first edition using the URL, just use i instead of ii after the language code. In the example above, the wiki address for the first edition is: http://ar-i.demopaedia/wiki/63 . Note that many sections have the same number in the first and second editions, but not all.

Accessing directly to a term or expression

It is also possible to access a TextTerm directly. For instance, the term “age-specific fertility rates” within the second edition of the English Dictionary (en-ii) can be accessed via the URL, http://en-ii.demopaedia.org/wiki/Age-specific fertility rates. Note that spaces within the TextTerm are automatically replaced by underscores in the URL address. If the expression desired contains accents or non-Latin characters, enter them into the URL. They will be replaced automatically by their Unicode values.
